Sea kayaking Pembrokeshire small group calm conditions briefing before launch

Sea Kayaking in Pembrokeshire – Faqs

If you’re planning a sea kayaking experience on the Pembrokeshire coast, you probably have a few questions.

Below are the most common things people ask before booking — from what to wear, to safety, to what you can expect on the day.

Do I need experience to go sea kayaking in Pembrokeshire?

No — many of our guests are completely new to sea kayaking.

We offer both guided tours for relaxed exploration and structured courses for those wanting to build skills and confidence.

If you’re unsure which is right for you, we’re always happy to help you decide.

Is sea kayaking safe?

Yes — when it’s done properly.

All trips are guided by experienced coaches, with small group sizes and locations chosen carefully based on weather, tides and ability.

Our focus is always on good judgement, not pushing limits unnecessarily.

What’s the difference between a sea kayaking tour and a course?

  • Tours focus on exploring the coastline, caves and wildlife
  • Courses focus on building skills, confidence and decision-making

Both take place on the same coastline — the difference is the focus of the day.

What should I wear for sea kayaking?

Because we use sit-in kayaks, which are much drier than sit-on-top kayaks, you don’t need a wetsuit.

We recommend you wear:

  • Comfortable outdoor clothing (layers work best)
  • No cotton if possible
  • Old trainers or similar footwear

We provide waterproofs to keep you dry.

What happens if I capsize?

It’s very unlikely — especially in our double kayaks.

But if it does happen, we’ll have you back in your kayak quickly and safely.

And because you’re in a sit-in kayak, you’ll warm up again quickly once you’re back on the water.

Are your kayaks stable?

Yes — very.

Our sea kayaks are designed for stability, efficiency and comfort on the sea.

For families or anyone feeling unsure, we use double kayaks, which are extremely stable and easy to paddle together.

What wildlife might we see?

The Pembrokeshire coast is home to:

  • Atlantic grey seals
  • Seabirds (including puffins in season)
  • Occasionally dolphins

Wildlife varies with season and conditions — but there’s always something to see.

Where do trips take place?

We are based in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, it’s the UK’s only coastal national park.

Meeting locations vary depending on the day’s conditions, and full details are sent after booking.

What happens if the weather is bad?

We monitor conditions closely and if the weather isn’t suitable, we’ll contact you in advance to:

  • Change the date
  • Offer an alternative
  • Or provide a full refund

You won’t be taken out in poor conditions just to “get the trip done”.

What age can children join?

It depends more on size than age.

As a guide:

  • Children need to fit the equipment properly
  • Most are around 4ft+ in height

If you’re unsure, just ask — we’ll give honest advice.

Do I need to bring anything?

We provide all specialist equipment.

You should bring:

  • Comfortable clothing
  • Spare clothes and a towel
  • Food and drink for the day

Drybags are provided for your belongings.

Can I bring a camera?

You can — but you don’t need to.

We take photos throughout your trip and include them at no extra cost, so you can focus on enjoying the experience.
