• A free, plain‑English guide to help you make safer decisions on the sea — no matter who you paddle with, or if you paddle alone.

The sea doesn’t care how experienced you feel

Every year, people get into trouble on the coast not because they set out to do something reckless — but because they didn’t know what to ask, what to look for, or what really matters once you leave the shore.

  • Some paddle with friends.
  • Some go out alone.
  • Some join organised trips.
  • Some buy great kit and assume that’s enough.

The sea treats everyone the same.

This short guide was written to help you slow down, think clearly, and ask the right questions before you launch — questions that quietly experienced paddlers ask every single time.

What this guide will help you understand

In this free PDF you’ll learn:

  • What actually matters more than conditions looking “OK” from the beach
  • Why tides cause more problems than weather for most paddlers
  • How to spot gaps in planning before they turn into real problems
  • What safety equipment genuinely makes a difference — and why
  • How experienced sea paddlers think about routes, timing, and escape options

It’s written in clear, non‑technical language, and it applies whether you’re:

  • Joining trips occasionally but making your own decisions
  • New to kayaking
  • Returning after a long break
  • Self‑taught
  • Paddling with friends

What this isn’t

This isn’t:

  • A technical manual
  • A scare story
  • A sales pitch
  • A substitute for experience

It’s a starting point — one that helps you make better decisions, sooner.

Why I wrote this

I’ve spent decades paddling and guiding on the Pembrokeshire coast.

What I’ve seen again and again is this:

People don’t usually get caught out because they ignore danger.
They get caught out because they don’t know what questions to ask.

This guide isn’t about telling you what to do.
It’s about giving you a framework to think clearly before you’re committed.
